When the Irish descend into bathos

The Irish at times can in the main display toughly analytic minds, like nuggets.

But when they apply this toughly analytic mind to a lot of high-toned nonsense. then they descend into dross and bathos, ie from the commonplace to the exalted, a ludicrous mind leap. 

Bathos is one of the most used tropes of Irish  life, and when they of the Emerald Isle veer into byzantium  (labrynthine) twaddle, they display bathos.

But then that is what makes them such interesting talkers and users of language.

As Oscar Wilde, the uber talker himself, put it,  "...we are a nation of brilliant failures, but we are the greatest talkers since the Greeks."
