It is not ''we are sad therefore we cry," but "we cry, therefore, we are sad."

 It is not, 'we are sad therefore we cry,’ but ‘we cry, therefore, we are sad.’

So said William James' (1884) in his theory of emotion. The arugment goes that it is the body which is the primary source of emotion and not the (embodied) brain. In this Jamesian formulation the accepted hierarchy is reversed and the emotional locus usurped, Hey, call me  a sensori-motor fascist if you like but most neuroscientific luminaries would be in agreement on this.
